Jo, I want a Bastet Creations original corset! Could you please tell me how long it will take and what's involved?
The process of designing and constructing your corset will take about four to six weeks. The process begins with a meeting where we'll work together to find and crystallize the design of the corset you want. The next step is the construction of a lightly-boned calico mock-up based on your design specifications and measurements. At this stage there will be 1-2 fittings to ensure that the fit, design and details are exactly as you wish them to be. Once we're happy with this I'll get to work on producing your unique, fabulous corset!
How much does a Bastet Creations custom designed and fitted corset cost?
The price of a Bastet Creations corset starts at NZ$500.00 and includes a full design and fitting service. The final price is dependent on complexity of design and choice of materials. I will send you a quote for your corset after our initial discussion. A non-refundable deposit of NZ$100.00 is required at the time of your first fitting and payment in full is expected before receipt of your finished corset.

Jo, I notice that Bastet Creations is based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Can I order a Bastet Creations corset if I live elsewhere?
Because Bastet corsets are personally fitted, I need a body to fit 'em to. Everybody's shape, posture and alignment is different, so much so that even two people with the same on-paper measurements might require substantially different shaping in their corsets. (For instance, two people might have the same bust measurement, but one may be broader in the back with a smaller cup size and the other might be chestier with a narrower span across their back. This affects the shaping of the upper part of the corset.)
If you live elsewhere in New Zealand, drop me a line anyway - I do travel around the country occasionally. For a travel fee I may be able to come to you. Or, if you're going to be in Christchurch for a day or two, let me know in advance and I can arrange to do your fittings while you are in town. If you live overseas don't despair - we may be able to work something out, or I can help you to find a corset maker in your area.
I'm new to corset terminology. Why is it important that your corsets are steel boned?
Boning provides the vertical strength in a corset, keeping it smooth and supportive and preventing buckling at the waist. Steel boning refers to either coated spring steel strips or what is called spiral boning, a more flexible type of steel bone. Mostly my corsets are boned with spring steel, with spiral boning only being used in certain special circumstances. Spring steel retains its shape and will not soften or bend with body heat, unlike the plastic boning that is commonly used in cheaper off-the-rack corsets. This means that your Bastet Creations corset will have a long life and will not buckle or collapse uncomfortably at the waist as many plastic-boned corsets and corselettes are inclined to do. Busks are also generally steel, and come in a variety of types. I will help you chose the best busk for your corset design.
The only exceptions to my steel boning rule are some of my early-period historical replicas, in which other forms of boning such as 'bents' or bunches of broom straw were sometimes used. Of course, all my corsets are whale-friendly! Whalebone (actually baleen) is no longer used to bone corsets.

Can I buy the corsets in your galleries? Why doesn't your site have online purchasing facilities?
The galleries on this site are a portfolio of my past work. As each corset I make is a one-off creation, I do not carry 'stock' styles for you to order and thus there are no payment facilities on this site.
I'd like a copy of a corset I saw online/in a magazine. Will you make it for me?
When you are deciding what sort of corset you want, you will no doubt see many pictures of corsets that appeal. Indeed, I encourage you to bring pictures to our meeting so that I can more easily see what you'd like. However, I take pride in producing original work and I would not want to rip off another corset maker's design. When you look at these pictures, decide what aspect(s) of the corsets appeal to you, and then think about how you'd like your own unique corset to incorporate those aspects to produce your individual design - it's much more fun that just copying!

I'd like a jacket/wrap/skirt to match my corset. Can Bastet Creations design and make these items as well?
If my production schedule allows it I'm happy to make accessories to go with your corset but please talk to me about accessories at our initial meeting. If I am unable to fit these items in I can supply extra fabric so that you can have a dressmaker make the other parts of your outfit.
How about more specialized items such as crinolines, farthingales, corset covers or bloomers?
Talk to me - I'm happy to make these items if my schedule allows. Please allow an extra three to four weeks for crinolines and farthingales.

Being human an' all, my weight fluctuates a bit. Is this a problem when getting a corset fitted?
Small fluctuations in weight are not a problem. I usually recommend that my clients have their corsets fitted with a two inch gap in the back lacing, to allow for such fluctuations: if you drop a couple of kilos, just lace tighter. If you gain a little, simply increase the gap!
I'm intending to lose a fair bit of weight. Can I just order a smaller version of my current corset now?
Your proportions can change a bit when you lose significant amounts of weight, so I'd recommend that you wait until you've achieved your goal before having your new corset made. That way we can make sure you get the perfect fit. After all your hard work you'll have earned a treat!

Why 'Bastet'?
The Egyptian goddess Bast is a goddess of, among other things, sensuality and wisdom - attributes that are seldom combined in modern Western thinking. She is a strong, capable and sexy goddess, and I hope that my corsets help to bring out this sort of positive self-image in my clients. Victorian Egyptologists' early attempts at translating hieroglyphs made a few mistakes. 'Bastet,' a variant on Bast's name still occasionally seen today, is actually one such Victorian mis-translation. As many of my corsets are based on Victorian designs, I felt that the Victorian version of the name, with all its associations of romance and exoticism, was entirely appropriate.
I absolutely must have a new corset for a fabulous soiree in a fortnight, darling! Can you whip it up for me?
Depending on my schedule, it may be possible to fit in a rush job. Check with me first - it's no good telling me halfway through the build process that you need it tomorrow! Extra charges apply for rush items. There may also be an additional charge for completion by Christmas, New Year's Day, Valentine's Day or major local formal or fetish events.
